DroidFresh - Samsung’s new Galaxy A7, Galaxy A5 and A3 series comes with premium designs and a good balance of specs, but which Galaxy A device is the one for you? There are a lot of factors than can be important to determine which device is best suited to your needs, so here we are again to help you demystify the nerdy details and make it all simple to understand and compare.
The Galaxy A series represents a new direction that Samsung has decided to follow. The company was always knocked for its poor design taste and cheap materials even in its flagship devices. It seems that this criticism has worked finally and Samsung has begun concentrating on these aspects after a decline in profits.
Launched earlier this year, the Samsung Galaxy A series consists of a trio of premium phones – the Galaxy A7, the Galaxy A5, and the Galaxy A3, each targeted at a different price range, in that order. While Samsung hasn’t hyped the devices up sufficiently to sell record numbers of units, the response to the devices has been good enough that Samsung decided to imbibe some of these design elements in its latest flagship, the Galaxy S6 along with its variant the Galaxy S6 Edge.
There is a lot to talk about these phones, so let’s get started.
Design
Design will be one of the most important aspects of these phones for the average user, since this is something that Samsung has concentrated on in these devices. Hearkening back to the old Galaxy designs instead of the uglier designs of Galaxy S3 and later, the Galaxy A7, Galaxy A5 and the Galaxy A3 are strikingly similar to each other when it comes to the design.Samsung Galaxy A7 vs Samsung Galaxy A3 vs Samsung Galaxy A5Although these devices are more about premium design, Samsung has concocted a careful blend of metal – real metal – and plastic. With a consistent colour scheme and careful polish, these three Galaxy A devices strike a really good balance between utilitarian design and aesthetic ideals.
With plastic donning the duty of covering major parts of the devices, there is also a thin metal frame with chamfered edges that runs around the device, giving it a really nice look. Samsung has retained its physical Home button, making it look much better than the ones on the older Galaxy devices. There is a capacitive button on either side of the Home button, completing the navigation buttons set on these three devices.
There is a front facing camera and the main camera is on the back along with an LED flash on each of these three devices. The main camera protrudes, which is not uncommon for a Samsung device, but it still sticks out as being one of the ugly things about the phone. This is certainly not good for a premium device.
Moving on from the design to the hardware, the Galaxy A7, the Galaxy A5 and the Galaxy A3 come with Super AMOLED displays.
Galaxy A7
Starting off with the priciest Galaxy A device on the list here, the Galaxy A7 comes with a 5.5 inch Super AMOLED display of 1080p resolution, with a pixel density of ~401 PPI. That is a very good, dense display and since it is a Super AMOLED display, you will be able to enjoy pure blacks and deep contrasts with excellent viewing angles. Sunlight legibility is also excellent, something we’ve grown to like about Samsung phones recently. There are two variants of the Galaxy A7 – single and dual SIM. The single SIM version comes with an Exynos 5 Octa 5430 chipset, which comes with an octa core processor and a Mali-T628 MP6 GPU. The dual SIM version comes with a quad core Qualcomm Snapdragon 615 processor and Adreno 405 GPU. There is 2 GB RAM and 16 GB internal memory, expandable with a microSD card.
The Galaxy A7 comes with a 13 MP camera and an LED flash, with a front facing wide angle 5 MP camera. This is to be expected in a device that costs as much as the Galaxy A7. The biggest phone of the lot also comes with a 2,600 mAh battery, which is a bit on the small side.
Galaxy A5
The Galaxy A5 comes with a 5 inch Super AMOLED display of 720p resolution, with a pixel density of ~294 PPI. That is a bit on the low side considering the price of the device, so the Galaxy A5 loses some points here. Again, since it is an AMOLED display, you can enjoy great contrasts and true blacks. There is only one version of the Galaxy A5 – single SIM. It comes with a quad core Qualcomm Snapdragon 410 processor, similar to the one in the Moto E second gen LTE model. There is an Adreno 306 GPU to handle the graphics. With 2 GB RAM, you won’t run out of memory for your applications. There is 16 GB internal storage which can be expanded with a microSD card.
The Galaxy A5 also comes with a 13 MP camera and an LED flash along with a 5 MP front facing camera. There is a 2,300 mAh battery inside the phone, which should keep you going for most of the day at least.
Galaxy A3
Lastly, the Galaxy A3 comes with a 4.5 inch Super AMOLED display of 960×540 pixels resolution. The pixel density measures up to ~245 PPI. Again, since this is an AMOLED display, you should enjoy it more than the regular LCD displays because of the factors I’ve stated above. There are two versions of the Galaxy A3 – single and dual SIM. Both versions come with a quad core Qualcomm Snapdragon 410 processor and Adreno 306 GPU, like in the Galaxy A5. However, the single SIM version comes with 1.5 GB RAM and the dual SIM version comes with just 1 GB RAM. That doesn’t quite make sense, but this is the way it is. There is 8 GB internal storage, which can be expanded with a microSD card.
The Galaxy A3 comes with an 8 MP camera on the back with an LED flash and a front facing 5 MP camera. The battery is on the lower side, at just 1,900 mAh.
